Born from Sustainable Seas

Tohorā is the legacy project of the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge, established in 2014. Our objective was to enhance utilisation of our marine resources within environmental and biological constraints.

Built on extensive knowledge

Tohorā harnesses the findings of over 100 research projects over 10 years throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. These findings come from 450 ecologists, experts in mātauranga, Māori economists, lawyers, social scientists and practitioners.

A powerful tool to support change

Tohorā is a free resource that rapidly summarises our research, pulling from multiple sources to offer clarity and direction. It is an assistant, supporting decision-makers, iwi, business owners, community groups, and those in the education sector.

A name that honours our ancestors

Tohorā are our whales. They are sacred. A taonga. Tohorā guided our ancestors across vast oceans. Now, they’re helping us find a way once more.
